On
a lonely stretch of highway, roughly half way between Katherine and Alice
Springs stands a signpost which reads 'Three Ways' and from here you can either
turn tail and head back to Katherine, travel east through the Barkly Tablelands
or continue straight ahead to the township, Tennant Creek. Another mining
town in the early gold rush days, you can still see tumbleweeds rolling drunkenly
down the main street.
Travelers
on their way to and from Alice, must stare in wonder at the endless desert
plains and one could easily mistake the barren land for the red earth of Mars.
However isolated Tennant Creek may be, it is a fitting introduction to the
'Devil's Marbles' and the fascinating
journey throughout the Red Centre.
