LAKE EYRE/Causeway Crossing 5 Day Tour

Lake Eyre is the largest lake in Australia, the thirteenth largest in
the world and the largest salt lake in the world. This year it is predicted
that the lake could hold up to 20 cubic kilometres of water. A volume
equivalent to 40 times the volume of Sydney Harbour.
Brief
Itinerary 5 Day Tour
Day 1. We depart Adelaide at around 8.00 am and travel via Two Wells -
Mallala - Balaklava - Blyth
to Brinkworth., then on through Yacka to
Gladstone where we visit
the historic Gladstone Gaol. Next stop at Beetaloo
Reservoir for lunch and a look around before heading to Quorn via Laura - Wirrabara -
Murray Town - Melrose
- Willmington - Hancocks Lookout (a brief stop) and the Mt. Brown Creek
track. At Quorn we have
afternoon tea then move on to Hawker - Mt. Little and Hookina Creek- our
overnight camp site.
Day 2. Historic Beltana, Sliding Rock Mine for
some exploration and then north to Copley. This
is our morning tea stop and the specialty of the bakery is Kangaroo
and Claret pies and suggest a Quandong (wild peach) pie purchase for desert. Next stop is Lyndhurst;
the junction of Strzelecki and Birdsville tracks and the gateway
to the desert region.
In this
area we take a look at the museum of "Talc Alf" a bush
character who carves talc rock for the
tourists for a living and who has many stories to tell. We then
inspect the old Farina Ruins before
moving on to Marree; the junction of Birdsville and Oodnadatta
tracks. We will visit Hergot Springs
before setting up camp on Muloorina Station.
Day 3. We are priviledged to cross the Goyder
Channel between Lake Eyre North and South
and explore this infrequently visited area of the Lake under the
guidance of the Muloorina
Station Manager, on whose property we shall be travelling. This is a LIMITED
OPPORTUNITYfor only 20 vehicles this year. A 7am start sees us cross the causeway
over Goyder Channel and head for Prominent Hill overlooking
Belt Bay, on the way passing through Jackboot Bore. Our lunch stop is
near Bonython Headland on a beautiful shell beach right on
the edge of Lake Eyre.
It's then off to Camel Canyon where years of erosion have sculpted an
unearthly moonscape. Most of this travelling is on rough
bush tracks or shotlines. The finale is the magnificent vistas of
Jackboot Bay with the sun reflecting off azure blue waters. We
return to camp around 6.30pm after a full and breathtaking day to an
unforgetable Muloorina sunset.
Day 4. This morning we refuel at Marree then head up the Oodnadatta Track to
the junction with the Borefield Track. Here we turn south and
travel to Olympic Dam where we will try and get a tour of the site.
There may be additional costs for this. It's then on to Roxby Downs,
the
town that was specifically built to service the needs of the mine
workers. here you can purchase lunch if you wish. From here we travel
to
Woomera and look for an overnight campsite.
Day 5. This morning we head for Port Augusta our final destination.
At Port Augusta we visit The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens and
take their informative tour. Then to the Wadlata Outback Centre
(Winner of 6 State Tourism Awards). It is here after lunch (for which
we pick up the tab) that our tour ends. From here it's a leisurely 3.5
hour (300km) trip to Adelaide on good bitumen roads, or you may wish
to linger in the Flinders Ranges for a day or two.
