The great
Murray River runs for 300km through this vast outback region with boundless
lakes, creeks, billabongs and a variety of wildlife you may never see
together in any other region in Australia. Bearded Geckos sipping water
from the Pink Lakes in Mallee, Red Kangaroos standing
tall against a darkening afternoon sky or wild
pelicans in flight over rocky outback terrain.
This really is what Australia, is all about. Ride
on a majestic paddle steamer, relax on a
riverbank, sip locally made wines or handpick
your own nectarines, almonds and olives. This region offers endless opportunities
to laze around. Try camel riding, ballooning, fishing and water
skiing or after a few days camping how about an icy cold beer with the locals
down at the Pig Whistle Hotel. Across sandunes and
scrub and in the slightest whisper of a breeze, the mystery of the sacred
dreamtime comes alive. Many tours in this area focus on the Aboriginal
tribal culture and history and here you will find the site of the oldest
Aboriginal civilization yet discovered.
