The township of Wollombi is known, not only for its mixed cultural ambience but primarily due to the towns close proximity to the vineyards of the Hunter. Located 30km south of Cessnock (which is 25km west of Newcastle), the surrounding hillsides mark the gateway to the Hunter Valley.
Indulge in the mind blowing Dr Jurd’s Jungle Juice at Wollombi Tavern and on Sundays, you can’t go past a Hare Krishna Feast at the local New Gokula Farm. As they say” chant the Hare Maha Mantra and your life will be sublime”. In nearby villages, Aboriginal rock art sites can be visited by foot
or horseback. You could even spend the afternoon, at an old colonial
homestead enjoying a not so traditional devonshire tea or the never
to be missed, "Sunday Roast!" With a couple of good wineries in Wollombi you may
never have to leave. You can visit native Australian flower farms
or try your hand at grape picking. There are over a dozen good wineries in the Hunter, some offering light meals or with restaurants overlooking vineyards and there are no shortages of Gods nectar. Don't miss a trip to Barrington Tops, truly one of this regions best features. The Barrington and Manning Rivers are only two of the many scenic rivers in this area and with a few adventure tour companies you will be sure to make the most out of this world heritage listed area.
