Here the untouched wilderness of the highlands meets with coastal rainforests, providing the traveller with an unexpected blend of mountains and sea. Cows graze in rich green pastures, smoke rises from the chimneys of cottages scattered throughout the valley and raging surf crashes against the rocky outcrops along the coast.
The south coast offers more than 10 National parks including Jervis Bay Marine National Park. Famous for having the whitest sand beaches in the world this coastal area also provides Australians with oysters like no other waters can. Fishing boats tackle the seas off Ulladulla and Eden providing a smorgasbord of fresh seafoods that city dwellers are happy to travel the 2-3 hours for.
Wollongong boasts Australia’s largest regional Art Gallery and the largest Buddhist Temple in the southern hemisphere, the Nan Tien Buddhist Temple which is open to the public. Again you have a range of available activities and many interesting places to see, from hang gliding with HangglideOz at Bald Hill or a visit to The Kiama Blowhole, which sprays water hundreds of metres into the air through two rock caverns. Other picturesque places to visit include The Kangaroo Valley, Fitzroy Falls, Wombeyan Limestone Caves and Shellharbour. Lake Illawarra is popular for sailboarding and other water activities such as snorkelling are recommended at Bushrangers Bay.
