About 500km back along the highway you may second guess this part of your trip but let us assure you the Red Centre will be the highlight of your NT adventure with much more on offer than you will have expected. Ayers Rock, referred to as Uluru (Ool-a-roo), is a sacred Aboriginal site and although access has been provided for tourists to climb the side of the rock, this practice desecrates the beliefs of the native owners of this land.

Uluru - See more of Su's photos here

To stand beside this towering natural wonder will be a significantly humbling experience unequalled by the 'triumphant climb'.

The Macdonnell ranges to the east and west of Alice Springs town centre provide you with numerous opportunities for climbing with hiking trails throughout. Many tours are on offer and the activities are endless. You could mistake this for the Sahara Desert with date palms silhouetted against the endless blue skies and of course the occassional camel.

Whatever the purpose for your visit, dress sensibly. This is the desert and the temperatures out here are extreme. You will need a good pair of walking shoes and plenty of drinking water when out and about. Also, don't forget to pack a long sleeved cotton shirt, 15+ sunscreen, wide brim hat and a warmer pullover for evenings.
