Cairns is a wonderful destination for backpackers, with rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef to explore, a public outdoor lagoon, and cool CBD bars in the town itself. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of great places to stay for travellers on a shoestring.
The HostelBookers Awards for Excellence is a great place to start when looking for the best accommodation around the world. The awards recognise the best properties around the world according to HostelBookers customers. There were four hostels in Cairns winning awards in the Oceania category for 2012.
Voted One of Oceania’s Top Three Hostels
And the award goes to… Travellers’ Oasis
It’s perhaps the small size that makes this place feel special: dorms only have three or four beds, and there are options for private rooms too. This means travellers have more space to relax and feel at home, and most user feedback cites how friendly, helpful and exceptional the staff is. Outside there’s a tropical pool and BBQ area, and inside there’s Wi-Fi and a common area for hanging out with others.
Voted Best Atmosphere
And the award goes to… Calypso Inn Backpackers Resort
Calypso is all about having fun, with an excellent pool party area and free nightly entertainment including open mic nights, Jenga competitions (with a chance to win a trip to Fitzroy Island) and live reptile and snake shows. The easy-breezy atmosphere is all made possible by the staff, whose motto is “We’ll take care of ya!” BBQs and a funky bar complete the picture.

Voted Best Staff
And the award goes to… Dreamtime Travellers Rest
With social nights for Aussie BBQs, pizza and movie marathons, staff at Dreamtime Travellers Rest go the extra mile to make your stay in Cairns a fun and happy one. They make it easy to get around, too: there are free Greyhound pickups, as well as drop-offs to the reef and bus stop. You can also book tours for free. The hostel has Wi-Fi, a pool table and common rooms for socialising.
Voted Best for Couples
And the award goes to… Globetrotters International
As well as dorms, Globetrotters International has excellent private doubles for couples. Luxury rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs and air conditioning, and are spacious enough for two. Décor is smart and modern, and there is a large pool and garden area for hanging out and meeting other travellers. It’s also in a calm and quiet neighbourhood and isn’t a ‘party’ hostel, so you’ll be able to get a good night’s sleep in a place with a pleasant atmosphere.

Mission Beach and Dunk Island were popular destinations for Hippies and artists in the 60's and 70's, and are still two of the most magic places to chill out. Dunk Island is a lush green paradise well known for it's surreal "Blue Ulysses" butterflies, and out of the ordinary sunsets. You will most likely never want to leave which is why camping is restricted to 3 days and a max of 30 people at any time.
Rainforest villages, waterfalls, swimming holes are all such common features in the Tropical North.
If Possible try and see some of the sights through the cairns region. In particular the Aboriginal cultural park owned and operated by the Tjapukai or "People of the Rainforest". These are the indigenous tribespeople, or Bama, who inhabited the region which extends from Cairns to Port Douglas and inland to Kuranda.
