Brisbane is the largest city in Queensland with an atmosphere as friendly and welcoming as any Queensland town and quite relaxed when compared to the buzz of inner city Sydney or Melbourne. The airport is located 9km from the city and a cab fare usually costs around $15. If travelling alone go for the 'skytrans' bus which costs around $6.50. To give you an idea of how close at hand most of the sites are to the city hostels, hire a bike for the day (you can pretty much take them anywhere) and if you love to shop for a bargain with undated classic style, Brissy has heaps of secondhand and retro stores in areas like Paddington and there's much to be found at New Farm Markets.
