King Island lies at the western entrance to Bass
Straight, with flights available from Melbourne, Launceston, Devonport
and Wynyard. An island of shallow offshore reefs and shipwrecks, you
will see abalone divers and fishermen of all sorts and almost certainly
catch a glimpse of fur seals from a colony on nearby Reid Rocks. Experienced
divers can take off from the shore or you can go with a group to visit
the wrecks.
You can also enjoy horseriding along deserted beaches,
visit the tallest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere or browse through
local stores.
You will find the variety of birdlife unique with
turkeys, peacocks and pheasants sharing the land. Lush farmlands sit
atop the rugged coastline providing cattle with the right kind of green
to make the mouthwatering King Island Cheesesa world wide hit!
You can visit the cheese factory and once you have tried King Island
Brie or King Island cream, you will agree it is second to none.
Interesting to note that Kelp is harvested on the island and what washes
up on the shore is converted into interesting items referred to as,
'Kelp Craft'. If you see some, drop us a line and let us know if you
eat it, wear it or use it for some serious decor?
