West Coast Accommodation

Queenstown, Cradle Mountain, Strahan, Macquarie Harbour

The west coast was mined heavily at the turn of the century and what remains of this rugged wilderness has not seen a dramatic change. Old and active mine sites are still present in areas such as Queenstown and the consequence of such an industry upon this delicate environment can be seen here. The majority of this region is listed as world heritage which in this case means that its natural resources needed to be protected. The nearby Franklin River was the object of extreme protests in the 80's by environmentalists wishing to preserve the area and thanks be, they won!

South west National Park heads the journey north along this coastline. Its chain of mountain peaks merge with those of Wild Rivers National Park, Lake St Clair National Park and Cradle Mountain creating a magnificent backdrop for the entire West Coast region. Strahan,  one of several small villages randomly situated between the mountain ranges and the sea. Located on the shores of Macquarie Harbour. This humble fishing village provides a focal point for those travelling further afield. Stand on the port and watch the sunset fall behind Sarah Island while fishing boats return for the night. You can enjoy scenic flights by helicopter or seaplane, whitewater rafting on the Franklin or try jet boating on King River.
