You’ve made it to Australia – a long way from anywhere so you have to visit the Great Barrier Reef in Far North Queensland – a paradise for divers & snorkelers alike
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest reef system comprising nearly 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands. It stretches from Bundaberg in Queensland past the tip of Cape York at the top of Queensland, a distance of approximately 2,800 kilometres. The Great Barrier Reef which can be seen from outer space is the world’s largest structure made by living organisms. It was named a world heritage site in 1981. A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park which helps to limit the impact of human use such as fishing, diving and other tourism related industries.
The Great Barrier Reef is a very popular tourism region, particularly the areas around the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns in far North Queensland. There are numerous tour operators just waiting to take you on a diving or snorkelling trip to the reef. Most diving spots can be reached within an hour from the shore. You can choose from day trips to the reef to dive or snorkel or live aboard multi day tours where you get to dive a few times each day. This region is also a great place to learn to dive with operators who are certified to teach you, from the first day in the classroom to the last day of your dive. And if you don’t want to dive or snorkel on the reef there is nothing better than a day trip to the outer reef, enjoying lunch on the boat and either swimming in the clear waters or viewing the marine life on a submergible vessel.
Not to be outdone, the west coast of Australia also offers some excellent diving opportunities. Ningaloo Reef is a virtually untouched barrier reef about 250 kilometres in length that stretches from Coral Bay to Exmouth. If you just want to snorkel you can go straight off the beach into the warm waters, if you don’t want to do even that you can view the reef by submersible vessel. The warm waters of the Ningaloo Marine Park are home to the Whale Shark as well as numerous other varieties of marine life. People come from all over the world to dive here and to swim with the Whale Shark.
