The Blue Mountains, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House are the three most popular tourist attractions to those that visit New South Wales, Australia. In fact, as most overseas visitors arrived into the international gateway of Sydney, it would be unlikely to find a visitor to Australia that has not visited the spectacular Blue Mountains.
Less than a two hour drive directly west of Sydney, the wonderful Blue Mountains let off an amazing blue haze, hence the name Blue Mountains, from the eucalyptus forests that make up the mountain ranges. Most visitors head for the main town of Katoomba, which has several great backpacker hostels. From there, it is only a short walk to the magnificent lookouts that overlook the Three Sisters Rock formation. You can also take a glass bottomed scenic skyway over the magnificent valley of the Blue Mountains, or one of the main paved treks. Always wear suitable footwear though, as there can be uneven surfaces.
If you choose not to stay at the Blue Mountains, it is possible to do a day trip, as regular trains run from Sydney to Katoomba and they are very reasonably priced. Tour operators in Sydney also offer cheap one day tours to the Blue Mountains and have free pick ups from most Sydney hotels and hostels.
