Far to the north at the very tip of the country lies Cape York. This area has only two climatic seasons being the Dry season which is from May to November and the wet season from December to April. The dry season is the best time to visit this area as during the wet season most of the roads are impassable, yet many people enjoy the green time between December and April and guided tours are often the best way to go at these times.
Accommodation in the Cape York area is good with cabins, rooms, eco lodes and of course camping in permitted areas all available most of the year. There are restaurants and a few takeaway food outlet as well as markets where local produce can be purchased. There are a number of shops where you can get not only your basic needs but souvenirs, fashion items etc.
Fishing is one of the big pastimes here and there are a number of fishing charter companies that offer some great packages. You can fish in these tropical waters for barramundi, salmon, mangrove jack and mackerel and queenfish to name a few or take a sport fishing charter and go after that elusive fish you always wanted to catch.
You can take a scenic helicopter flight over the area, have a charter flight or hire a boat. Alternatively you can go on a 4WD safari. These safari tours are a great way to enjoy the areas under the watchful eye of a professional guide who can ensure you see and enjoy all the area has and stay safe at the same time. You can also go horse riding or take a romantic sunset cruise. Having 5 communities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders there are many cultural displays as well as some ancient rock paintings to be seen. Locals are more than willing to chat to you and impart their knowledge about any of the things you need to know.
Further south you can visit Port Douglas which has gone from a tiny coastal community to a world famous holiday destination with a large resort. Port Douglas offers the visitor all levels of accommodation and has many amenities for a luxury holiday.
