The seaside resort towns of the Fleurieu Peninsula are a great place to kick back and relax. Towns such as Victor Harbour, Goolwa and Port Noarlunga have all the amenities a backpacker could want. These normally quiet towns explode during peak holiday season and take on a real carnival atmosphere.
Water based activities are high on the agenda with swimming, boating and fishing all popular as is whale watching, diving on the wreck of the HMAS Hobart and also have the opportunity to see the rare leafy Seadragon, beach driving at Aldina or taking a cruise to the Murray Mouth or the Coorong National Park. Visit the SA Whale Centre or get up close and personal with the Little Penguins on Granite Island where you can ride the horse drawn tram.
Take a ride on the coastal Cockle Train or dive in the Port Noarlunga Aquatic reserve. Heading inland a bit and you can visit Glacier Rock, Hike the Heysen Trail and have a wine sampling at the cellar Doors at McLaren Vale. There are some spectacular views to be seen from the Mypoona Reservoir Lookout and a great camping spot is the Deep Creek Conservation Park.
There are many arts and craft shops as well as art galleries and museums of different kinds. Shopping for antiques is always a great pastime and the farmers markets at Willunga will give you a chance to buy some local produce.
For the adventurous you can take surfing lessons, go bushwalking, go for a camel ride, play golf or go cycling. There are plenty of beaches to enjoy and for the real adventure seeking you can take your clothes off and enjoy nature at the Maslin nudist beach.
There is no shortage of accommodation on the Fleurieu Peninsula and there are numerous places to grab a bit to eat at a takeaway food outlet or a great restaurant.
