Kangaroo Island

Located off the south of Australia, Kangaroo Island is one of Australia's largest Islands. In fact, it is Australia's third largest Island, only after the Island State of Tasmania and Melville Island. At its closest point from the Australian mainland, it is only 13 kilometers away, and therefore clearly visible and accessible from the Australian mainland.

Kangaroo Island has a magnificent 540 kilometer coastline, and also happens to be one of South Australia's most popular tourist attractions with over 150,000 people visiting the Island every year. There are many reasons that people visit Kangaroo Island, but some of the most popular reasons are to observe the giant sea lions that call Seal Bay their home. There are also numerous Penguin colonies around the Island. There are also safe swimming beaches, with the most popular ones being Emu Bay, Stokes Bay and Snelling Beach. Hiking is also a very popular pastime on Kangaroo Island, but it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear as the terrain can be quite demanding.

Located on Kangaroo Island are many backpacker hostels and inexpensive accommodation. Getting to Kangaroo Island is also not difficult with many tour operators offering inexpensive transportation from Adelaide.
