Sydney is the largest city in Australia. It contains four million people, more than one-fifth of the total population of the whole country. For many visitors, Sydney is the point of entry into Australia.
There is so much to see that it is difficult to know where to start, but best to begin in the centre and work your way out. The very first thing to do is to purchase a travel pass and start with a ferry ride on Sydney Harbour. Travel passes cover train, bus and ferry services, or, alternatively, bus and ferry services only, within the chosen area for a period of seven days. If the pass is purchased after 15:00, the ticket may be used on that day, plus seven more days.

The Rocks - The Rocks is one of the oldest areas of Sydney. Lying beside the harbour in a central location, it was naturally one of the first places to be settled. Historic walking tours depart daily. Here you will also find The Museum of Contemporary Art - Opening hours are 10:00 until 17:00 (16:00 in winter) and admission is free, except to special exhibitions, and The Sydney Observatory - Perched up on Observatory Hill above The Rocks. The observatory can be visited free during the day between 10:00 and 17:00.
Darling Harbour - offers a number of attractions. On Wednesday to Sunday evenings there is a free display of sound, lasers, film and water projected onto waterscreens in Cockle Bay. (Transport - Train to Town Hall. Sydney Explorer, Stops 18 to 23. Ferry, tram and monorail) and here you will aslo find Sydney Aquarium - This is one of the largest aquaria in the world. Its most famous residents are sharks, but there are all types of fishes, as well as seals and penguins, and extensive underwater glass tunnels. Transport - Train to Town Hall. Sydney Explorer, Stop 21. Ferry to Darling Harbour. Monorail to Darling Park.
Panasonic Imax - A screen ten times as large as that in a conventional cinema is housed in an eight storey high building. Film shows start every hour on the hour from 10:00 until 22:00 and last for 45 minutes to 75 minutes.
Sega World - This is a indoor theme park full of various electronic games and open from 11:00 until 20:00. Transport - Train to Town Hall. Sydney Explorer, Stop 22. Monorail to Garden Plaza. Tram to Exhibition.
Sydney Fish Market - This is a place for eating, as well as purchasing fresh fish. There are restaurants, cafés, bakeries and sushi bars. The market is open from 7:00 until 16:00. Transport - Train to Town Hall. Ferry to Pyrmont Bay. Tram to Fish Market.
Chinatown - Although Chinatown is best known for its restaurants, there are many other types of establishment in this area, and not all are Chinese, despite the Chinese arch at the end of Dixon Street. This is an Asiatown really, and it incorporates various Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and Thai shops. Transport - Train to Central. Sydney Explorer, Stop 17. Monorail to arden Plaza or Haymarket. Tram to Haymarket.
King’s Cross - This area, east of the city centre, is well known for its restaurants and night clubs. It is alive 24 hours a day and oozes a general impression of sleaze. Here you may encounter a strange mixture of destitute travellers and cajoling peepshow purveyors, which makes it one of the most fascinating locations in Australia. You will probably have strong reactions of endearment or distaste for this place. In recent years it has also become the prime location for backpackers hostels, so popular that at busy times it is difficult to find a bed here at all (although you sometimes have the impression that nobody sleeps in King’s Cross anyway). Transport - Train to King’s Cross. Sydney Explorer, Stop 9. Bondi Explorer, Stop 3. Airport Express Bus 350.
Taronga Zoo - The zoo is just across the harbour on its north side and it commands a beautiful view of the city, although whether the residents appreciate that is uncertain. It is open from 9:00 until 17:00.. A ZooPass, which includes the return ferry fare from Circular Quay, costs $30. There is a Zoolink ticket which includes the off-peak return rail fare, cost depending on point of origin. Purchase tickets at Circular uay Ferry terminal - Catch the ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo OR bus 247 from Queen Victoria Building (near Town Hall).
