Rainbow beach and Hervey Bay are playgrounds for the
adventurous. With a wide variety of water activities to choose from
and some of the best Whale watching opportunities on the Queensland
coast. The best way to visit this area is by 4WD tour, or round
up a posse and hire your own. Either way be prepared for the time of
your life. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and
along with Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef it is on the world heritage
list, so please treat this amazing area with the utmost respect.
The heritage of this marvellous coastal area is rich
with Aboriginal history, in fact locals can attribute the naming of
the coastal strip known as the coloured sands and nearby Rainbow Beach,
to a mystical Aboriginal Fable. The fable tells of a rainbow that fell
in love with a human girl who was in danger from an evil warrior. One
day the rainbow battled the evil warrior to save the girls life but
in doing so sacrifised its own existence in the sky and as it shattered,
the beautiful colours fell to the sands below! (Neat huh!)
Lastly, a note of caution about the Dingo's. They
are WILD animals - don't feed them and don't approach them. They are
also very crafty and can work their way into your bag so watch your
sun glasses! And they can swim in the water as one of our sriters found out when running on the beach and tried to escape.
Also take care if you hire and drive a 4WD, as accidents do happen and normally due to fast turning on the sand the vehicle turns over. Getting stuck in the sand happens easily but usullay someone will provide a tow and you will I am sure be helping others. Have fun!
