The climate is moderate and provides the opportunity for many outdoor activities. Canoeing, fishing, sailboarding and swimming can all be enjoyed with the comfort of a nearby houseboat. In nearby Barmera you can saddle up your horse and enjoy the annual Country Music Festival which is held in June, of each year.
The rich riverland area attributes its lush environment to the Murray River. Citrus fruits such as the orange, mandarin, lemon and grapefruit are the main crops grown in this area. Orchards can be visited in Waikerie, situated on the banks of The Murray, this is the first large town you would pass through if traveling from Adelaide. From here, the river then continues its course directly south through quiet country towns, meeting with the ocean inlet of Lake Alexandria and Lake Albert.
Towards the horizon you can view the magnificent stretch of land known as The Coorong or "Kurangh" meaning narrow neck. The all time Australian Film "Storm Boy" was filmed here and explored this slice of paradise with a little boy and his pelican friend Mr Percibal.
Go with the flow: get a group together, hire a fully-equipped houseboat and drift down the River Murray. Basic houseboats cost less than you think, and you don’t need a skipper’s licence – only a sense of fun and a taste for exploring. Lose yourself on Australia’s most majestic river, see the soaring red cliffs, call in at historic river towns, then seek out quiet stretches to enjoy wildlife, sandy beaches and starlit nights on deck. Of course there are other ways to float your boat in the Riverland. Check out the amazing Backwaters, best experienced by hired canoe; or take to the wetland boardwalk at the Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre.
