A killer combo of hills, wineries and beaches and all within an hour of Adelaide. McLaren Vale is as easy on the eye as it is on the palate, so hire a bike and try the original Cheese and Wine tour (you get a selection of cheeses, a map and a wine-tasting/cheese-matching itinerary). One of the best things to take home from your Aussie holiday is surely a new-found talent for surfing – so head to Middleton, where surf schools operate off the huge crescent of beach. Neighbouring Victor Harbor is a holiday town famous for its historic horse drawn tram, penguin watching, whale watching (June to September) and thousands of ‘Schoolies’ carrying on after their final exams…

Rapid Bay is a real find for photographers and those who love to fish. Completely surrounded by cliffs it is accessible only by a steep descending road which joins the highway heading to Cape Jervis to the south. Overlooking the waters of the Gulf St Vincent, Cape Jervis offers a great opportunity to view nearby Kangaroo Island or you can take a day trip aboard the Sealink ferry for a first hand experience.

This region faces directly south and as a result has some very powerful swell. The sweep on the beaches can be very strong so be sure to swim in flagged areas of patrolled beaches and if you're not an experienced surfer stick to Middleton Point. A note of warning for body surfers "keep one arm out front" - you don't want to break your neck!

The township of Clayton rests on a shallow bay dotted with the reedy islands of the The Hindmarsh island waterways. You can hire a dinghy and spend the day working your way along the myriad of creeks surrounding these islands. Take a packed lunch, rod and reel and your banjo!

The scenery throughout the peninsula is varied with great stretches of sandy beaches and rocky foreshores. Olives, Almonds and citrus fruits are grown to the east and wineries are situated in valleys.

The Inman Valley boasts the rare Selwyns Rock - a 500 million year old glacial pavement and photographers will enjoy visiting the ruins of historic churches on the outskirts.

Follow the heritage trail of the Scotts to the town of Strathalbyn. Situated on the picturesque River Angus its character remains unchanged with beautiful old buildings to visit and long narrow streets to wander.
