Kangaroo Island
Should have been called ‘Kangaroo and Koala and Platypus and Echidna and Sea Lion and Rare Glossy Black Cockatoo Island’ – but it wasn’t. It is, however, being called ‘ Australia’s Galapagos’. Nine times the size of Singapore, KI is so big so you can find a forest, beach or clifftop to commune with nature. (And when she’s this beautiful, why wouldn’t you?) Walk among sea lions on Seal Bay, surf down Little Sahara’s monster dunes, try deep-sea fishing, or simply hike like a mad thing through 1500 sq km of national and Conservation parklands, ticking off those Aussie animals as you go. Other attractions include gourmet food, new wineries, brutal whaling histories and lively little towns like Kingscote… Kangaroo Island
is an unspoiled, wilderness paradise.
With 450km of rugged coastline it is world renowned for white sandy beaches and crystal
blue waters. On the south coast, Admirals Arch at Cape du Couedic and the sand dunes of Little Sahara are
only two of the scenic highlights easily found on the island. Rocky caverns
can be explored in true Robinson Crusoe
style and you could even catch your own crayfish in Vivonne Bay which is a base for this industry. The island
has something to offer everyone, from the great surfing beaches at Pennington
or Stokes Bay.
The climate found in this part of the world makes
this island totally unique. Wildflowers
bloom all year round and the weather never lets you down. You
can enjoy summers that aren’t too hot and relatively mild winters. Kangaroo Island Sealink ferry departs from Cape Jervis
twice daily and provides a comfortable 40 minute journey to the island.
You could spend at least five days touring the island and not visit
the same place twice so be prepared to allow for a few days at the very
least, or you’ll end up wishing you had.
