I think there are websites that can organise shared campervans but they never worked for me. I wanted to see Alice Springs without doing the expensive tours and the only way was to share a ride. I just got to the town a few days early and went running around all of the backpacker places reading noticeboards. I ended up meeting a bunch of UK girls who owned their own van and after a few drinks we decided we got along well enough. It was really cheap and soooo much fun!

If you can't find any notices then trying posting your own too - you'll need a phone number or email address you check all the time though to make it work!

You can also do "campervan relocations" where you ring any campervan company and ask if they need people to relocate their vans - you get a free drive away van BUT you can't book till the last minute and still need to pay insurance and petrol. They give you a certain number of days to get from place to place. I got from Sydney to Adelaide in 5 days for $25/day insurance plus petrol! AND the van they wanted driven back slept 8 people - state of the art Winnebago worth over $100 000. So I filled it with other people from the hostel and we hit the road.
