There’s lots to see and do in Brisbane city centre and a great way of getting about in ‘town’ is on the Free Loop. This is a free bus service provided by the Brisbane City Council, which circles the city’s central business district, both clockwise and anti-clockwise.

As I have quite a lot of overseas visitors, I decided to spend a day in town on a mini discovery tour to see what could be done from the Free Loop service. I started out at the City Hall near King George Square. Crossing the road I went to the Queen Street Mall, spending a couple of hours browsing around the shops and cafés, both in the Mall and in the Myer Centre which is a large, multilevel shopping complex. Then I jumped on the Free Loop to Central Station, where trains to and from most suburbs can be caught, and went to see the Shrine of Remembrance at Anzac Square. This is a monument to the fallen soldiers and defence personnel in all wars but particularly for the ANZACs of WWI.

After a short while I got back on the next Free Loop bus to the Riverside Centre, where they have great markets on Sunday mornings. After strolling along the boardwalk next to the Brisbane River, to the Eagle Street Pier and all its eateries, I rejoined the bus and went on to the City Botanic Gardens. I finished my mini tour with a wander around the Gardens and the Queensland University of Technology campus which has some lovely old buildings in its grounds.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day to myself and getting to know my home city even better than before. I’m glad I took the time out to do it and now have another ‘trip’ on my list of places to go and things to do in and around Brisbane for my visiting friends.
