What should i look for in accomodation

Hi I'm Jay
I was just wandering if anyone can help me out please, i just wanted to know what i should look for when i book for accomodation and where i can i find out about places? Can anyone tell me why they choose the places they stay? I'm going to north queensland to see and dive the great barrier reef. Its my first solo trip so any help would be great =)
