Outback South Australia Travel Information

Whether you drive yourself or book into a guided tour, Outback South Australia is a truly fascinating place to explore. Not only will you see some amazing scenery in these desert areas but it is almost like stepping back in time as you explore the many outback towns and historic sites.

The Flinders Ranges are known as one of the most beautiful landscapes in Australia with stunning gorges, rugged cliffs and amazing displays of wildflowers. Then you have Lake Eyre the normally dry alt pan which when full of water is the largest lake on the continent. Gaze at the huge amphitheatre at Wilpena Pound which is millions of years old. Apart from these great sights many of the towns in outback South Australia are not only great to visit but have long histories in Australia’s past.

Innamincka is a town in the middle of the Innamincka National Park. This national park is rare in that it is one of the very few national parks that combines conservation with pastoralism. Visit the cooper creek System to see turtles, mammals and frogs and travel about the park and explore the many historical sites and learn about the Aboriginal spirituality of the area.

Visit the opal mining town of Coober Pedy which is famous for producing most of the world’s opals. Due the excessive temperatures here much of town is underground including most of the shops, the church and many of the 4000 resident’s homes. This town is also notable in that it has a golf course with NO grass at all. Try your hand ‘noodling’ for opals.

There are many Outback tours and much to see and accommodation is plentiful from the outback pubs, camping grounds or budget motels as well as some larger resorts in places like Wilpena Pound. Caution is advised when driving and leaving established roads and tracks is not advisable. Always leave word where you are headed and do not deviate without notifying someone. In case of breakdown, Do Not leave your car.
