Much of the area classed as Outback in Victoria is in the North West corner of the state and is close to the Murray River. Being a smaller state travelling to the outback is much easy with this part of Victoria outback only a about six hours driving time from the capital. Less remote than other outback areas in Australia this area offers some beautiful scenery, with many changes in landscape as well as diverse flora and fauna.
Much of this part of Outback Victoria is located in one of Australia’s biggest National parks the Murray-Sunset National Park. Outback tours offer some great opportunities for hiking birdwatching and exploring the many walking trails through the park. See the large red kangaroos, bearded geckos and a vast array of birdlife. Along the river there are tall red gums and rich red soil yet further to the south of the region there is mainly Mallee scrub which is a form of eucalypt tree which does not grow very tall. This area is quite arid and many desert creatures call this place home. Mallee fowl, the native hopping mouse and the planigale although these last two are mainly nocturnal.
There are also some great towns around the area and Mildura is one of the largest regional centres here and offers the backpacker every amenity possible. From here you can organise a ride on the paddle steamer which does regular cruises on the Murray River. There are also many other activities such as camel rides, hot air ballooning, water skiing and of course fishing. There are some great golf courses in the area where you can play a round and golf club hire is available at most courses. There are plenty of guided tours you can take where you can learn about the history of the area as well as Aboriginal sites and the opportunity to learn a little of their culture.
Accommodation options are plentiful with budget motels, caravan and camping parks, rooms in historic hotels as well as resort and luxury hotels. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets in Mildura and you will find the smaller towns all have takeaway food outlets as well as plenty of shopping facilities for your needs. Travelling further south visit the Gold Mining areas including Bendigo, Ballarat, Avoca, to name a few and try your hand at prospecting. You never know!
