Phillip Island Travel Information

Approximately one hundred and forty kilometers south of Melbourne in the southern Australian State of Victoria, lies the beautiful Phillip Island. At its widest point, Phillip Island is nine kilometers wide, and twenty six kilometers long. With a magnificent coastline of ninety seven kilometers, Phillip Island is a premier tourist attraction for not only Australians, but overseas visitors to Australia too. Although an Island, Phillip Island is connected to the mainland by a modern 660 kilometer bridge which links the mainland town of San Remo with the Island town of Newhaven.

A staggering three and half million people visit Phillip Island every year, many to see the abundant wildlife, such as the Penguin communities, Kangaroos and the world famous Tasmanian Devil. During certain times of the year, the Island is turned into a motor sport enthusiasts dream, with many intentional racing events held there, such as the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

For surf enthusiasts, Phillip Island has a strong reputation amongst professional surfers as having some of the best and consistent surfing conditions of anywhere in Australia, and as such several international surfing events have been held there in the past.

Good quality backpacker accommodation can be found either on the Island, or just over the bridge on the mainland. There's Phillip Island accommodation to suit all budgets. Getting to Phillip Island from Melbourne is very easy by road, either by car or regular bus service. It is also possible to do inexpensive Phillip Island tours from Melbourne.
