Often referred to Australia’s millionaire playground, backpackers should not be put off by this tag line in the slightest, as Port Douglas has so much to offer the budget conscious traveler. Budget backpacker accommodation is in abundance, and nearly all offer tours and sightseeing specifically tailored with the budget conscious in mind.
Situated on the magnificent east coast of Australia in the State of Queensland and a one hour drive north of Cairns, Port Douglas is surrounded by the beautiful Daintree forest on one side, and the world famous coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef - one of backpackers favourite Queensland tours - on the other. Often described as two jewels meeting, both the Daintree Forest and the Great Barrier Reef are listed as world heritage sites.
Many backpackers who visit Port Douglas enjoy the walking safaris through the Daintree Forest, or if the water is your thing, snorkeling around the live coral reefs or scuba diving on the outer reefs of the Great Barrier Reef is all possible from Port Douglas.
Many tour operators also offer live aboard boats where you can sail around the great barrier reef from a half day adventure to a full week. Again, many tour operators have the backpacker's budget in mind, and the costs are actually comparable with a night budget Queensland accommodation. So why stand on land when you can sail the Great Barrier Reef at the same cost.
