The south western region of Western Australia has quite a reputation in a number of different areas and is ideal for the backpacker who likes to mix adventure with heritage and culture. For the water sport enthusiast, the surf at Margaret River attracts surfers from all over the world and is sure to give you a great surfing experience. There are some great beaches to enjoy and the fishing is the area is also good with good catches a common occurrence. Scuba divers can also get a thrill the HMAS Swan Dive Wreck located about 15 mins from Meelup Beach at Dunsborough. There are tours to the wreck or you can obtain a permit and dive alone. Snorkelers can also view the wreck from above.
The long Busselton Jetty makes for a great walk with a great view of the ocean and the Underwater Observatory here is an adventure for the individual or the whole family. Horse riding, bushwalking and bird watching are all possible in this area. Whale watching season is always a draw card and one can be truly amazed at the giant trees in the forests in this area. The hinterland promises amazing displays of wildflowers and you can see many species of native animal.
Of course, a visit to the area would not be complete with a winery tour. This area is renowned for its wines and the wineries at Margaret River offer some fine wines and great gourmet meals.
