Tennant Creek Travel Information

Located 1000km south of Darwin and 500 km north of Alice Springs Tennant Creek has a population of only 3500. In spite of this there is plenty to see and makes for a welcome place to refresh your batteries from the open roads. Tennant Creek is cattle country and is the main centre for many large stations. As well as this Tennant Creek’s history is about gold and the town still has plenty of gold to be found!  Whilst you are here you might want to do a bit of fossicking yourself you never know what you may find.

There is plenty of Aboriginal culture to be found here and there are some cultural centres where you can learn about the history of the traditional caretakers of this land. Enjoy places like the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre where there are many exhibitions showcased. Or go the Pink Palace which was once a hostel for the stockmen and their families and is now the Julalikari Arts and Crafts Centre where many Aboriginal women paint and sell their artwork.

There are many historical building in the area such as the remains of the telegraph Station built in 1872. Only 11 km from the town centre the station is a reminder of how important the overland telegraph link was in connecting the country. Battery Hill Mining Centre offers the visitor a chance to see a little of the Gold mining past of the area. With the only ten-head stamp operating in Australia a guided tour here is a must. If getting out and about in nature is of interest lake Mary Ann is only 5 km away and walking or cycling to this great spot is easy. Enjoy a safe swim and bring a picnic lunch. There are BBQ facilities as well. There are plenty of bird watching opportunities and some lovely tracks to go for a walk.

Tennant Creek has a caravan park where you can camp and budget motels. There are shops where you can purchase you supplies and of course a local pub. The locals here are very friendly and helpful.
