Canada Backpacking
Backpacking Banff and Jasper
The Canadian Rockies are absolutely stunning. Part of the same range that runs through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana in the States, these mountains dramatically jut out of the ground. That means great backpacking opportunities, along with enough wildlife to fill the average zoo.
The two major towns in this area are Jasper and Banff. Approximately 200 miles north of Banff, Jasper is a little smaller and doesn’t have the same sleek, cultivated persona. This is never more true than when the Banff Film Festival is on, making the town almost unaffordable for the average backpacker.
There are a number of hostels in both towns. You might want to consider pitching a tent, however, especially in the height of summer, when the hostels hike prices and the weather is perfect for sleeping under the stars. For those backpackers who lack camping equipment, local outdoors stores both sell and rent equipment.
Of the two, Banff is definitely your spot if you’re looking for a party. Be prepared to pay premium prices for drinks, however. Lounge off that hangover in the Banff hot springs, located on Sulphur Mountain.
The hiking in this part of Canada is unlimited. One highly recommended track is the Skyline Trail outside of Jasper. This three day walk (easily walked in two for those in good shape) takes you above treeline, providing great views of the mountainous landscape.
Whether your backpacking takes you to Jasper or Banff, you’re sure to experience a wide array of beautiful scenery, wonderful animals, and great Canadian beer.
