Backpacking in Paris: Ways to Save in One of Europe’s Priciest Cities
Paris’ nickname is the City of Lights. Perhaps a more fitting name these days for backpackers (especially if you’re carrying around currency with George Washington or Abe Lincoln on the front) is the City of Price. You’ll be amazed how quickly your wallet drains, with hostels costing upwards of thirty euros a night and a decent dinner only a bit cheaper. Here are some tips to help you save.
Skip lunch: By dipping into a bakery or side market around noon or so, you’ll find the freshest bread, cheese, and fruit you’ve ever tasted. This food will also be significant cheaper than anything you’d find in a restaurant. In most cases, the average backpacker can eat for less than three euros.
Hit the Museums: Each museum in Paris offers free admission every once in a while. In particular, the Louvre has great deals, including free entry for those under the age of 18. On Friday nights, those under 26 can also gain admission without paying.
Ride the Rails: It’s not necessary to stay in the heart of Paris. Instead, consider staying in the Bastille or one of the less “hot” districts. Paris’ metro system is extremely efficient, allowing you to easily run from place to place. Unlimited passes are available.
Paris is pretty much a must-see on your grand tour of Europe. At the same time, it doesn’t have to break the bank.
