When backpackers think of the South Island of New Zealand, Queenstown immediately springs to mind. After all, why wouldn’t it? This is a gorgeous land of plenty, if your idea of plenty is awesome outdoor activities and great nightlife. There’s simply no other place in this part of the world that offers skiing in the winter, hiking in the summer, and partying year-round.
There’s no shortage of hostels in Queenstown, and the options within that category fall across a wide range of prices and styles. Of course there’s the typical “backpacker party” hostel scene, but if you’re looking for more of a laid-back atmosphere, you might want to trek down the road to Wanaka, Queenstown’s neighboring little local’s spot. While tourism has started to take off here in the past few years, it isn’t the constant backpacker oriented bombardment that you may find irritating in Queenstown proper.
Wherever you stay, you’re guaranteed a pretty incredible outdoor experience. Nearby Milford Sounds is a fjord land straight out of Norway, with great big green chunks jutting out of crystal clear water. Take a cruise, and spot dolphins cresting over the wake of the boat.
Another option is one of the great hiking trails in the surrounding area. Rudyard Kipling called the Milford Track “the finest walk in the world”. He wasn’t kidding. This three day long trek is simply breathtaking.
Whatever you decide to do in Queenstown, count on a great backpacking experience. You will find bungy jumping, off road driving, jet boating, extreme sports, rockclimbing and loads more. Do book before you arrive to be sure you can do the activity you want.
