Not many people think to put Poland on their Eurail pass. That’s a mistake. With Prague becoming more expensive almost daily, Poland represents a new place to experience Eastern Europe on the cheap. Backpackers considering heading to somewhat less conventional destinations should put Krakow on their list. After all, backpacking has more to do with exploring than traveling.
Krakow boasts the largest castle in Europe, an enormous expanse that stretches for what seems like miles. All of this is perched over the old city square, which at one point also held that same distinction. There’s really nothing more enjoyable than sitting down to a cold beer (or, on chilly mornings, a hot cup of coffee!) while doing a bit of people watching on the square. It’s also a very cheap way to pass the time if you’re nearing the end of your trip and your wallet’s feeling light.
At night, Krakow explodes. Many backpackers will tell you that the Krakow of today is the Prague of the 1990’s. There’s that much excitement in the air.
Only one other thing to mention: be prepared to gawk. The Polish are all tall, blonde, and beautiful. Don’t worry, though. They love the average backpacker, and most will be as excited to talk to you as you are to talk to them.
