USA Backpacking
The United States offers a buffet of things to do and see that varies widely by region and state. While some travellers opt for a whirlwind tour starting in New York and going to San Francisco, this is a tough schedule to do in just a few short weeks, and there is so much to see and do!
When someone asks "what is there to do around here?" it can - and should - meet with a question of "what do you enjoy?" If this is asked before you leave it maximizes the time spent on your holiday and allows for more detailed planning.
Unfortunately there are dishonest people everywhere - keep security in mind as you travel. Keep your passport, money and any valuables close at hand. Most people are honest and do not bother others' things but it takes one mistake or dishonest person to ruin a holiday. Also, when travelling by bus, train or plane, keep those same items *on* you. One traveller had the unfortunate experience of his luggage being routed on a different bus than he was on and while that is bad enough, it wasn't as bad as losing his money and passport with the luggage!
Providing you are not interested in an organized tour and would rather have the luxury of doing your own time frame, consider travelling to places many people don't see, and tailoring your holiday to your interests. Travelling during the "off" season can save you money also - for those with the ability to travel in October-November or March-April you can still see many things but save some money doing it. Of course this depends on where you want to go - the weather in some parts of the country can be a challenge during those times as well. Bring comfortable shoes! Your feet will thank you with some of the places to explore that involve walking.
Other States
Removed from the continental U.S. is the states of Hawaii, which is a major tourist destination, and Alaska. If you enjoy wilderness areas, consider a summertime trip to Alaska - use caution and drive carefully as along with the extremes of weather, daylight hours and country the wildlife can be deadly both to themselves and to humans. Moose, caribou, bear and many other large animals roam at will. Some areas you can spot wolves. Weather changes but there is still another piece of the viewing puzzle to be seen in Alaska. If you venture on to the glaciers be extremely careful not only of the steep drops on both sides but the ice cold water and mud areas. DO NOT run into an open mud field - it may not be mud but quicksand, which can quickly mire you down and without immediate help spoil a holiday! Alaska is a beautiful territory with hardy people and wildlife you won't see in the wild in most other parts of the U.S.
The United States is a vast territory with something for all interests within it's borders and often within the regions. From common tourist destinations to those where few venture, from sprawling cities to miles of farms and ranches the scenery changes by area and by season. Plan ahead, consider varying weather issues, plan for transportation and enjoy your trip!
