Australia bus
Renting a van or bus isn’t the only option for getting around on the ground. Greyhound Australia offers a variety of passes that will suit almost any backpacker. Each has specific advantages, so exercise care in choosing the pass that is right for you. Do learn more about by clicking Greyhound tickets.
The Australian Pass is the big daddy of them all. Valid for an entire year, this route literally takes you around the periphery of the entire country, with a quick detour through the center down to Ayer’s Rock. This pass doesn’t come cheap, however. The price for students (available with the ISIC pass) is almost three thousand dollars.
Perhaps a bit more realistic is the “Aussie Reef and Rock” pass. This takes the backpacker from Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef all the way down to Sydney. After stopping in this “most liveable city”, the pass brings you all the way out to Alice Springs, where you can explore the largest monolith in the world. At a little over 1,000 dollars for a student pass, this option is much more reasonable, and within the reach of many backpacker’s wallets.
For those staying in the country for a shorter period of time (or perhaps taking a trip in between Working Holiday positions), Greyhound offers mini-tours. These 45-day jaunts are much cheaper, and can be had for less than 500 dollars. For many backpackers, this might just be the most economical option. There are five such passes available on Greyhound’s website, with different routes to suit each backpacker’s taste.
The Greyhounds are generally fairly reliable and on time. The drivers are courteous, and unlike their American counterpart, Greyhound Australia is a very safe service.
You can also save money on accommodation by sleeping on the buses overnight. Though it might not be the most peaceful slumber, you’ll wake up to a sunny morning with some extra dollars in your pocket, ready to tackle the day.
